Ecstasy

Memories shower delicately when Time lefts its colorful foot prints within me.

When waves of ecstasy, desire, rise in the heart, spring season unfolded a beautiful flowering tree.

Winds blowing from the trees, is like the tunes from the flute weaved with thrill

The path I walk, blossomed with a tapestry of colors with a heart of goodwill.

The beats and rhythms which I have kept deep inside my soul rose tenderly

The songs are coming out to the beats of the heart refreshingly.

A new inspiration is blossoming inside me, unfolding to shower all the pleasure

Leaving the moments like whispers of golden anklets in my ears for an expected hangover.

Was it the star that shone unblinkingly? Was it a path that blossomed unendingly?

Was it the mind’s game that is playing? Was it the true aspirations of the will trying untiringly?

As the moment approaches, the excitement to connect is blinding.

Silence faded and never coming back when you smile that is so mesmerizing.

You walk around talking like a cute little girl my beauty

The golden letters that I want to write have frozen like dew drops on your lips, sweaty.

The Goal

The dripping of the rain droplets matches the heart beats

The inhale and exhale is full of exciting whispers

Of the minds intense anticipation of the moment

The eyes are telling stories in abundant

The hard work is the reflections of the commitment

The walk towards the podium is pleasant

The claps of the crowd is a stamp of acknowledgement

The mind is in an uncontrollable state of enchantment

The reaching of a goal is the final stage of fulfilment

Let’s not do it better , Let’s do it different

“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes.”

― Albert Einstein

Recently I started paying attention to connect different comments posted on Facebook to see if I can come up with a different insight and experiences that are different than routine. On Facebook I saw postings of joy and relief when exams are completed and students planning different activities to enjoy holidays before next semester starts. One was excited to go to Mumbai and some going back to their native cities and towns to hit the malls and cinema theaters. I saw posts from professionals who are planning of having trips to exotic places. I watch comments and likes  on the  photos posted on the face book. One of my friend posts about the songs he likes, another posts photos with beer cup in his hand.

My observations is that when we go to a farmers market we ask our mind questions related to food and when we are watching a game in a stadium we ask questions about the game. We don’t usually think of asking our mind  how to cool our tension with a nice and fresh fruit from a vegetable market when we are in a crowded  stadium.

Our mind is processing thoughts and giving us answers to questions that we ask. The questions that we are asking are what drives our behavior and is the key for our success in getting better at everything we love to do. By combining the fun and excitement of game with a healthy drink of fruit juice instead of junk food makes our experience more memorable and keeps us healthy  but that needs us to  ask  ourselves better questions to maximize the benefits from every action of ours.

We can maximize our fun, experiences, find new possibilities and enrich our lives if we can think of different things that can be done by asking the right question to our mind.  So if you are having holidays and want to have a greater level of satisfaction and experience,   ask your mind what are the new options you have other than the predictable things you do during a holiday.   we all need to have a  innovative mind set and we should be mindful of this. This kind of asking the mind, the right questions enriches  life with better experiences and may lead to more opportunities that we have never imagined possible. I always ask this question myself at the end of the day “What is that one thing that you did differently today?”  The key to innovation is to connect unrelated dots from different things, experiences  to come up with new experiences, new possibilities and new opportunities.  Good luck for a “ better life with best practices” (My company’s tag Line and vision)

New Economic Model and the Role for Academy

The dynamic environment of economic activities that shape the nations growth and prosperity needs a new language and new practices to sustain long term.   There is no end game. It is infinite game of aligning the best interests of our societies to stay hale and healthy, coexisting harmoniously within the wonderful nature by preserving and aligning our economic, industrial, technology and any kind of  progress and wellbeing of all the  living species . This can be achieved by orienting all that progress towards new environmentally friendly products and services and solid growth.

In order to meet that target there is an urgent need to redefine the status quo in Academics and bring academics to the forefront of economic activity of the nation.

Merging Academy and Industry as one entity will lead to major job growth and Economic Resilience when IOT (internet of things), Artificial Intelligence, Robots and Machine learning like technological innovation take away human jobs. The question to ask is  “GROWTH CAN BE MANAGED AND GUIDED, BY WHOM, AND FOR WHAT NEEDS”?  Academy should become the wellbeing centre of excellence (as explained in my Earlier blog here https://skillsnest.wordpress.com/2017/10/31/stop-building-classroom-and-focus-on-wellbeing-buildings-and-more-laboratories/

) to sustain and nurture new opportunities in products and services that align us with environment.

Innovation typically precedes strategic decisions and by redefining academy as part of economic growth of any country we will be in a position to create new opportunities and new possibilities.

Here is the game plan for introducing a new paradigm that I call ‘Economic sustenance by redefining academics’.

  1. The boundaries, language and legal matters that identify universities , colleges , schools and all educational related institutes needs to be redefined with an eye on tapping the vast pools of raw talents of students(knowledge and skills gatherers) , Research scholars, professors by orienting their academic activities on creating new opportunities.
  2. There is a huge effort by government in attracting major industries to invest in their respective states. Some of those industries in areas such as Machine learning, Chip designing, Artificial intelligence, Gene mapping, anti-aging (example: Google Calico project collaborating with Drug maker Abvie https://www.calicolabs.com/ ) have to spend money in establishing research laboratories. Instead Universities and colleges should be tapped and allowed to participate in government’s activities in this kind of initiatives to map the academy’s internal resources, knowledge, skills and infrastructure required by industry and actively engaged. This allows Faculty, students to learn corporate best practices and become valuable contributors to the economic prosperity of the institutes and helps industry with lowering their costs of establishing new laboratories.
  3. State and Federal (central) governments spends a lot of money on infrastructure development projects such as building dams, roads, mining (example sand, minerals etc. ) , smart cities and many such activities by floating tenders and inviting private industry to take up the projects.  Most of the projects are not implemented as designed due to various reasons such as corruption, poor usage of manpower, materials and plethora of issues. Academy and students should be allowed to become part of the project’s stakeholders which helps students, faculty to learn vital project management and people’s skills and earn some money for the institutes. Some of the major project delays, poor quality, and corruption activities can be eliminated as students and academy’s interests will be more in implementing quality and good practices in the projects.
  4. The whole academic nomenclature, infrastructure needs to be redesigned to make them part of this new economic model by mapping the raw talents of the students , expertise of faculty and connecting them to industry needs.
  5. Government should act as facilitator by allowing academy/private participation in projects implemented at state and country wide.

Universities, colleges and Education isn’t here to make us feel comfortable.  The intention, practices and the language is to make students feel excited and raring to go and find the truth and enlightenment. Academic institute in their pure form should be bringing energy, efficiency, bliss and completeness and fulfilment while actively engaging the raw talents of the students.

Are we moving our young towards Pre historic basic instincts?

With rapid developments in Artificial intelligence and use of it in developing robots that can do almost anything what we are capable of doing we humans will be left with not much to do until unless we come to terms with our cognitive and emotional intelligence. In this next Machine age humans will be left serving the Machines , 3D printers and monitoring the distributed manufacturing facilities. Deep intelligence networks autonomously can start a war or robots can kill people if not programmed properly.  Nations and their policy for human development needs to have a vision 2050 and beyond , right now to prepare our younger generation (with their bodies implanted with sensors and other electronics that control their feelings and habits)  for co-existence with Intelligent machines which are capable to compete and win better over humans in terms of work , logic and processing power.

Roughly around 50% to 60% of planets population becomes available to do something drastically different than what we do presently by year 2050(May be earlier too). This mammoth population will have nothing much to do except eat and have fun when smart machines are doing everything that kept present generations busy with  work, family life and social engagements.

In spite of  living in the most advanced societies mankind will still need to deal with basic human emotions of greed, ego, desires, consciousness, primal instinct of survival, love, hate etc whether it is today or it is  year 2050 and beyond.  Evil characteristics are primitive in nature but always played a vital role and still will play a vital role. Interesting read on this here http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160401-how-did-evil-evolve-and-why-did-it-persist

Presently there is an attempt to redefine the fundamental ideas of exactly what it means to be a Human. We can witness unimaginable things happening due to huge investments that control the natural habitat of homo-sapiens and other species. These efforts will pave way of world dominance by a few big corporations and few people

So it is time for every nation to have a policy plan in place for Human Vision 2050 to keep human as humans with feelings, consciousness and intelligence to overcome basic negative instincts. Here are some of the ideas that I wish to propose to make mankind have a meaningful peaceful coexistence.

Academic.

Today’s education system leads to high stress, depression, anxiety and other neurological diseases. Kids Mental strength to withstand even small pressure is depleting fast in this digitally connected fast paced life style. So the syllabus should include developing good human emotions, empathy spirituality, yoga, meditation and how to lead a life rather than just live. Schools should start focusing on nurturing and imparting   human’s best practices, deep cognitive and emotional intelligence. The curriculum should be carefully drafted to make the future citizens to be intelligent enough to know what is good for their long term fruitful coexistence on the planet.

Corporations and Governments.

The smartest and most creative companies will never stop from being just a profitable company. They will strive to become dominant market player and try becoming dominant across multiple business domains leading to world dominance. The Most innovative companies are working on possibilities of making humans immune to diseases, stop aging and other unimaginable things to us today. (example : Calico project https://www.calicolabs.com/)

Powerful Government’s will attempt strategies to have control of natural resources thru world dominance militarily and thru other tactics.   These strategies should be carefully monitored by both companies and governments to avoid self-destruction on the long run. They should consider planet’s other living beings, natural resources as part of their planning for peaceful coexistence and to stay human as much as possible.  Company’s innovations or Government policy matters should enable all citizens to have equal opportunity. They should encourage and support individual’s cognitive and emotional intelligence for better life with best practices for themselves, society and their families for peaceful coexistence.

There is a trend to make humans half robots with body implants, which is so worrisome since these half human/half digital human beings will lose the abilities such as empathy, consciousness and other natural human feelings and finally end up destroying themselves and other living beings. This reminds me of the pre historic life styles where there is nothing much to do but to eat and fight to grab others territories.

Our kids with their soul mate, deserve a nice evening walk in a beautiful garden under the moonlight, listening to their favourite music and having memories that they can share and cherish with their near and dear.   Let’s nurture and nourish the planet with better practices and let our companies consider human feelings to be part of their Technology innovations strategies.

Where there is a WHY there is a WAY

“The ‘why’ of what we do is much more motivating than the ‘what,’ we do.

When we are young we don’t really care to chart a course of action of what we really want in our life or where we really want to go. We just know that we need to go to school or college, make friends, study or have fun and pass out. If we are Lucky enough we get into job via Campus recruitment or thru some competitive exams whether we like it or not. All of these are familiar to most of the students.    Those are the golden days where we enjoy watching movies with friends, post photos on Facebook, study together or do something that we know really well. We never question “why” we do what we are doing daily.    We are in a comfort zone and we don’t care much to plan or plot a particular journey or reach a particular goal that is unknown to us.  We won’t know the meaning of “Vision” or what “Disruption” to our daily routine means.  Very few students move out of comfort zone, from daily habits, from the known life and experiment with things, think differently, work hard to reach great goals,  do something different than their friends or classmates do. They are charting an unknown path and at every step of learning they stop, re-evaluate and recalibrate their course of action and finally they will find a WAY for leading a life not just living another day that is just like yesterday for many others.

“Vision” implies you have a view of exactly where you want to go and you chart a course of action plan accordingly, like plotting a journey on a map, a straightforward road with no distractions, roadblocks or alternate routes.

Others just move forward and they don’t form any idea how to lead a life until a problem makes them to think. That is the time self is constructed and that is the time most of them take a course of action and follow.  That is the time WHY leads to find a “WAY” out of the situation. For some of those who don’t ask themselves “WHY” early on they may end up with doing something they don’t really want to do whether it is their subjects or life  or career.

So my friend every day you should question your routine with a WHY and you will realize that you need a WAY to better your life. Better life with best practices is what my vision is for skillsnest.

Chance favors the connected mind

In the fast moving digitally connected  and complex world-  our beliefs ,skills,  assumptions , our knowledge is constantly  challenged.  Willing to accept that we need to refresh our knowledge, skills and other matters makes us better positioned to take on any kind of new challenges that come across.

RICHARD GREFÉ  :   “You know, a few years ago, whoever had the knowledge had the power. But today, the power resides in those who have a sense of the way that knowledge flows. And that becomes critical because knowledge is growing at an exponential rate. So what does that mean? That means that for any individual to succeed, has got to go beyond just knowing things. They have to be curious, they have to be thoughtful. And that doesn’t come from social media and that doesn’t come form deep-diving in data. That comes from thoughtful conversations.”

We are in a  era and times that requires us to think differently. 19th and 20th century education has built invisible walls around everything. We are trained to see things, learn , watch and use things individually.  Students are trained to learn subjects individually.    Civil engineers focus more on their subject and less on other engineering branch knowledge and similar is the story with all other branches. Computers science students focus more on software and less on industry’s domain knowledge  which is more vital in today’s market place. There is no one course that combines all these knowledge from different fields and provide us the insights of how interconnected everything is and how to acquire the right knowledge to face today’s smart planet’s requirements to stay successful with the right skills for the rapidly evolving nature of corporate work and society’s cultural shifts.  I always used to stress this point to graduate, post graduate and PhD Students of engineering and MBA to come out of their  specific subject knowledge and look afresh by learning how all the subjects knowledge works together to create solutions and products we use everyday. (Think Apple I Phone’s focus on Design more technology less) . Today Technology has erased the boundaries of  all branches of sciences, agriculture, medical and even changed our daily life habits. Why then are we not understanding that we have to have a open mind and inclination to learn something unrelated to our subject matter?

I get inspired when i look at some smart companies combining cross platform knowledge from different industries and come with a radical design and products. One such company is Dyson. James Dyson is famous for inventing something new that we never think possible.  They don’t hesitate to take inspiration and knowledge from different sources to come up with  new product. Here is a Blades less fan they invented using principles or aerospace fans. Click here to know more http://www.dyson.com/Fans/FansAndHeaters/Fans.aspx

For those who have guts to think differently and achieve something Dyson innovation awards is the platform to take on the challenges. Here is the link

http://www.jamesdysonaward.org/Prize.aspx

Similarly Companies such as Toyota come with some amazing ways of improving quality in their products , minimizing waste in production process and reduce the cost of making high quality products for less.  We already learnt their best practices such as Lean manufacturing, Kan-ban, Kaizan widely implemented in different industries.  They now use a new method called Andon Cord.

” The andon cord is literally a cord that workers can pull – a cord they should pull – any time something in the manufacturing process goes wrong that would compromise the quality of the product or safety of the people. The line stops immediately. Everyone’s attention is turned to the problem. Everyone helps to solve the problem. And the line doesn’t restart until the problem’s been fixed, thus ensuring that zero scrap or defects are allowed to perpetuate.”

http://www.toyotageorgetown.com/qualdex.asp

So innovation don’t need to be complex. we just need to think different.

World’s knowledge levels today (mostly Industry) are so mature that we don’t need PhD’s anymore because industry’s maturity levels are so high that until we think differently and look beyond  PhD’s  knowledge;  sustainable solutions are not possible for the complex problems we face today. Medical field is one such area where sufficient knowledge is not there to solve diseases such as Diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer or parkinson’s etc in spite of having top notch scientists with multiple PhD’s.   The only way to go is look into a different field , combine your subject knowledge with it to create a new idea or a cool product or a new medicine for a deadly disease.

We have different lifestyles than our parents. Youth today are in a constant flux of adopting to new lifestyles with high connectivity to the entire world. Mobile connectivity, social media interactions, crowd sourcing for solving complex problems of the planet,  Internet of things, body connected intelligent sensors, health tracking devices like Nike shoes and many more new technology gadgets allow us to look different , work differently than our predecessors and acquire knowledge differently than what is taught in our colleges today (the good old style).

The reach of internet to every nook and corner of the world allows us to know any kind of information , acquire knowledge and skills needed. Technology as i said above , erased the boundaries of everything and i want you to remove the mental blocks (the artificial silos in your mind)   and train  your mind to look at things differently with a open mind. Today we are connected so closely via social media, tech gadgets that we can collaborate with the world’s  best  on a massive scale that is not possible in a physical form. One of the courses  I’m doing on Coursera ( https://www.coursera.org/course/strategy101)  has 90, 000 students from across the globe. We are learning by doing  , something new but connected to a single platform on coursera No class rooms to go,  only online practicals using technology and internet connection. Cool way of learning something new,  Right?   Colleges and Universities should focus on building Labs to help today’s students to experiment, tinker with tools and gadgets. Otherwise we only produce paper engineers ,  MBA graduates who are just fit to do a service job  , does not provide any competitive advantage to students nor to the country as a whole. Today we should worry that we bring out very insignificant percentage of  cutting edge products to market  in spite of one billion population and large number of PhD’s and Master students.

Do you want to be a listless person or want to impact the world with your knowledge.  Remember the title of this blog  “Chance favors the connected Mind”  That power of Connectivity should become your major weapon to acquire skills needed for 22nd century companies. Many of the problems industry faces will be solved by individuals  from across the planet. This is the future of work. People won’t be working for a single company. There will be problems that need to solved and if you solve it you get paid. That is what will happen in Job markets going forward.

So why waiting. Go get connected with the world’s knowledge. My Previous blogs have several world class resource links to start with . so check them..

Catch me if you can.. A story and corporate lessons

One day when kasyap’s father woke up and came out he saw that his goat is missing. He thought that the goat might have gone out thru the gate that was open.  He is worried and he asked his neighbor ‘Hello Rao did you see my goat anywhere’ No replied Rao. Why don’t you check in the fields, it might be grazing there suggested Rao.

‘Yes I will go right now’ and he called Kasyap and said ‘Kasyap our goat is missing and why don’t you go looking in the village if you can find it. Also take your friends with you so they can help you find it quickly’

‘Ok Dad ‘said Kasyap and he goes out to meet his other friends.

‘Our goat is missing Gopal, can we all search for it?  Some thief must have stolen the goat.’  Asked kasyap.

‘Yes we should catch that thief like detectives’ said Gopal excited about catching a thief.

‘Let’s go and meet our gang and let’s do the detective work’ said kasyap.

So they went and met the remaining friends and all started going around every house.

‘Hey that one looks like our goat’ said when they saw one in some ones house. Kasyap went near the goat and the goat yelled out loadly ‘MEEEEEEEEIII’

‘Hey kids what you are doing. Are you stealing my goat?  Go away or I will hit you’ yelled the house owner.

‘No this one is not your goat Let’s go ‘ said Renu and they went looking in other house.

Meanwhile Pinki saw a goat grazing nearby. ‘Hey there is your goat I think kasyap’  Let catch it’.  They ran towards the goat and the goat jumped up and down with sudden rush of kids towards it and hit a cyclist coming on the road and ran in to the street.

“What the heck????????’ yelled the cyclist while falling down? Hey you kids why did you shout like that? Raising his hands to hit the kids he yelled.

‘Run Run before he catches us ‘yelled  charan. They ran towards the goat again. Meanwhile the goat is now under panic and just rushed into a tea stall and hit the stove where the tea owner balaraj is brewing tea.

“Mommyyyyyyyy’ he yelled in pain when the hot tea fell on his feat. The goat than ran out to wards the opposite house.

‘You idiots why are you scaring that goat like that’ who will pay for the tea ? and who will pay for the burns on my legs ‘  the tea stall owner yelling in pain ran to catch renu who was near by.

‘Hey Run ………’ yelled Govind  ‘he will hit us ………’

Everybody started running away from the tea owner and Renu was so scared that she did not see that the lady walking with a pot of milk on her head. She dashed her and the lady fell down and the pot broke with milk flowing on the street. ‘Are you nuts can’t you see me?  I lost all my milk?  Who will pay for it? I will have to go to your house to collect the money’ yelled the lady who is so upset with this. Renu is now more scared and ran faster. All the friends finally came to a junction and where grasping for breathe since they ran so fast. Meanwhile they saw the goat.

‘This stupid goat brought us this trouble’ Let’s catch it’ said Gopal.

‘No this time we should surround it and then catch it together‘said Pinki

‘Yes let’s do that’ we should silently go all around it and catch it’ said Renu. I ‘m afraid to go home now since I hit that milk lady and my father will be upset with me’ she said angrily looking at the goat.

So they slowly surround the goat and plunge together as Gopal counted 1,2 3

‘THUD……..’ the sound of kids falling on to the ground was heard. The goat is too strong for them to hold on and it just jumped out of their collective hands and ran again.

“My nose……it’s hurting now’  Said Kasyap

‘so my hand too” said Pinki…

‘My knees are hurting’      said Renu.

‘‘This stupid goat made us fall ‘we should never let her go. ‘ said Charan spitting the sand that went into his mouth when he fell down.

‘Yes see all the sand and dust went into my nose …….AAACHIIIIIIIIIII’ Sneezed Gopal.

Now all the friends are furious and they thought they should have a proper plan to catch.

‘See how the goat is looking at us. ‘Pointing her finger Pinki said.

‘Yes it is teasing us we have to catch it’ said Charan.

‘Let get a rope and tie one side as a knot and we catch the goat with her neck in the knot’ what do you say’ said Gopal.

‘Yes let’s do it’. So all friends found a big rope and they made a big knot and they together swirled it towards the goat and finally got her by the neck. But the goat is now scared and know that this kids are not leaving her alone and confused started pulling the thread and the children along with it.

‘Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh what’s going on this goat is pulling all of us’ pinki yelled.

Hold it,  hold it tight’ yelled Gopal trying to stand on his feet.

‘wooooooooooooooooo  yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa  hhheeeeeeeeeeeee’ charan is now on the ground along wth Renu, Pinki and Govind. Kasyap while Gopal tried to stand and they fell down too. Together the goat started pulling them thru the streets and all the villagers are  confused whether the friends are playing or something went wrong with the goat.

‘Hey what the heck are you kids doing’ Leave the goat alone’ shouted a villager’

‘Thud   Dammaaaaaaaaaaaal            DOMMMMMMMMM, MEAWWWWWWWWWWW, BOWBOWBOW’ Dogs got scared and starting barking.

Now the Goat  is hitting the cyclists dogs and cats on the road. The traffic on the road is now running helter skelter and nobody has any clue what’s going on.

“How dare you dashed me’ yelled one villager and hit the cyclist with a stick

‘Are you mad why you hit me? You stupid fellow. The goat made me fell don’t you see that’ and he punches the other guy. The other villager falls on the pots nearby and some of the pots rolled on to the street and broke. Now the pot owner is mad at this man and hits him. They started fighting and some of the fellow people joined them and all went into a fight. Now many more villagers joined the fight and nobody has any clue why they are all fighting each other.

By now the goat has dragged the friends so much they are having injuries and having pain. They left the rope and roll over to the side of the road.

“it hurts me more now. This stupid goat  GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’ yelled Pinki,

‘It’s all your fault with your stupid idea. Gopal’ Yelled  at Renu . Renu hits Gopal.

‘How dare you hit me’ shouted Gopal and hit Renu. Renu escapes and Charan gets the hit.

He falls down and was so furious that he jumps on Gopal and while jumping hits Kasyap.

By now everybody are hitting each other and finally they all got tired and had blood on their faces knees and hands and all have become dirty.

Meanwhile the goat is still around running here and there and everybody of the friends felt like the goat is teasing them a ‘Catch me if you can’………..

They are all slowly stated walking back home and by the time they reached Renu’s house the milk lady and other villagers are waiting for them angry and complaining on them to the parents of Renu.

“why did you all do this’ asked Renu’s father.

‘Uncle My father asked to find the missing goat so we found him and tried to catch it we did not purposely hit the tea stall owner or milk lady. The stupid goat did this. Look how we are all hurt by the goat. “ Sorry”  said kasyap.

Now the villagers know what has happened. Meanwhile Kasyap’s father came looking for him and asked where they went. Kasyap and others told him what happened.

‘But our goat is already in the house. It got lost to our neighbors house that is two houses away from our house. Whose goat are you guys trying to catch? Asked kasyap’s father now confused.

‘That goat there at the junction’ said Charan.

‘No that is not ours ‘ Anyway go home and wash up. You are all dirty and made everybody angry today.

You should all say Sorry  to all the elders’  said Renu’s father.

So the goat is still there confused why some kids are after it and still running around with a rope around its neck. Finally the villagers have to catch and give it back to the owner who is now looking for it.

Corporate Lessons.

Imagine the task of catching a Goat as a project.  Lesson no 1. Don’t rush to start working on the project individually within a team.

Lesson No 2. When Plan B is implemented of catching with a rope, spend time to understand the challenge and come up with a error proof plan otherwise it will lead to Lesson No 3.

Lesson No  3. When Plan B fails all hell breaks loose, project failure looms large and everyone in the project is upset and end up with blame game and looses peace and harmony of collaborative work. This leads to blame game and affected parties not getting a clue of why  or what is happening.

Lesson No 4.  Don’t always plan for complex solutions and end up with huge expenditure, miscommunication, conflicts and lost opportunities. Make sure to pause and cross check the viability of the plan by referring back to what problem you are solving.   Kids plans lead to quarrels and raised tempers in the villagers.

Lesson No 5. “Silence is the Worst kind of feed back” that leads to fruitless efforts and project disasters. Kasyap’s father remained Silent and never informed Kasyap that their Goat is already found.

Agile professionalism

Wrote a blog for employees on how to stay successful  in their career in my linkedin profile. Click on this link for the post

Now or never. You decide your fate

If you’re young and ambitious and driven, don’t run from the challenge, run towards it. If you’re terrified of learning something new, go find a way to learn and master it. When you are a student and young you have loads of energy and enough time for learning as much as possible. You won’t stay young for ever and student life won’t stay with you for ever. You spend so much time having fun during college that you miss this vital point, that once you are out of college you are on your own to find a job and succeed in career. Campus interviews may give a job for some but that is the worst job with low pay and high pressure to handle. Those students who are smart enough realize the value of time and work towards their goals early on and once they are ready they also look for jobs they like to do in LinkedIn , twitter and Facebook other than campus interviews.

Life is full of temptations and distractions. When you are young you will have more opportunities to waste time, money and your youthfulness.

Start using your mind on what matters most for your life and for your family.Fate is not decided by anyone. It is you who can decide what is best for you and your family.  Time is precious and need to be spend wisely.  One of the best practice you need to develop is to check how you spent your day and what value you derived from all the activities you did during the day. Spending time on  Facebook, twitter or games or chatting or going to movies should be restricted otherwise it will  only add more junk in to your precious mind.  Networking with professionals , spending time to know yourselves , your strengths, your weaknesses and becoming mindful of all your activities will give you enough mental strength, knowledge and courage to find what you love to do for your career. Positive habits help you with clarity of thoughts when you need direction and guidance to succeed in life. Think of your parents, teachers and friends who you should trust for guidance and work hard to learn skills needed for you to succeed.  You may not love it while you’re going through the learning phase, but you’ll carry that learning and success with you  for ever. Once you achieve what you are aspiring for then you will have wonderful life. May be you will be  visiting exotic places and working on some wonderful and challenging assignments.

In order to have quality life, good food and good life you need to work for  it and  prove that you are eligible for good life.

I worked for that and I succeeded and i want you to succeed too.

You can start with small positive actions such as reading for a hour a day something new, doing yoga /meditation for a while etc and as days pass by they become your habits and you will be in a position to control your life and lead a life rather than living a life.

Similarly for getting rid of bad habits you should start with small attempts and then slowly  get rid of that bad habit  completely after some time.

Please do comment your feedback and suggestions.

Tips for great presentations

Most of us are not new to the most boring to the most entertaining , educational and motivational presentations we attend.  What we need to learn is not just what is told in the presentation but we should also watch how presenter /speaker is performing his act. That includes Body language of the presenter , the way the topic is covered, what tools and software is used, how they modulate their voices/moods and gestures  and how much they are interacting with the audience.  There are many online resources to tell us how a great presentation should be. Here are some sample of what is good practices of presentations. Search for some outstanding live presentations after you read this blog

1. Your Face.

While presenting you should attempt to connect to the audience in the room by briefly having a eye contact with each of them.  Audience should feel that you are presenting to them. You should also have smile on your face while presenting. Your facial expression are very important. If you look at the roof, or away from audience , that shows your lack of interest or purpose of your presentation and they will loose interest in what you are saying  and they stop listening to you.

2. Your body

Standing like a statue and reciting your presentation will not entice the audience towards your speech. Having appropriate body gestures adds some excitement to your presentation and keeps audience engaged. Moving around the space you have on the podium should be considered along with your body gestures in order to show your enthusiasm for the subject you are speaking.

3.Your Voice

Your voice is most important part of presentation. How you say what you say is most important for any good presentation. Adjust your volume and tone according the size of the room and the number of audience you have. Silence and space between words allows for emphasis and lets your audience catch up with your ideas. Variation in the volume, tone along with body gestures can bring life to your presentations. Avoid words like “Nothing but””, Like ,  ümmm”, Ähhhaa” Érrrr” etc.

4.Your presentation.

Your presentation should be a mixture of your talk, slides, audio and video and what and how you present on the stage. Engaging Audience for long time needs an outstanding mixture of all the above.  Audience will not have eternal focus on what you are saying until unless what you say matters so much for them. You are presenting for the audience’s benefit not to fulfill your desire to be in the limelight.

5.Practice a lot.

Practice helps you to avoid mistakes and  fine tune your language and other skills of presentations. Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers says that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. Practice is the mantra for an outstanding presentations.

6.Develop great opening.

The first 15 seconds are enough for audience to make a impression on you. You should use your opening statements wisely to catch the attention of the audience and  to listen to rest of the presentation. Start your speech by talking about something interesting: Give a staggering statistic, ask a question, make a declaration, or use a quote to draw people in.

7.Organize your presentation.

Your presentation should be a smooth flow of speech  as if you are saying a great story to your audience. Your presentation should have an obvious opening, a body, and a conclusion. Your presentation should also have a mixture of pictures, video and limited text. It is you, who is presenting not the power point. Power point slides allow you to stick to a certain flow and end your presentation on time.

8.Connect with your audience

You need to establish a connection with audience. Use a personal story that reveals something about you or your experience to create a connection. If you are a professional then  highlight your background and expertise to make audience feel comfortable that you are going to add value to their time by listening to you.

9.Check the facility.

Make sure before hand that all the hardware, software, mike setting, Lighting and good ventilation is there in the hall. You should avoid adjusting all the above when audience have already arrived. It is better you check the facility and practice on stage to get rid of stage fear before the audience take their seat.

10.Ask for honest feedback.

No one can claim to be the best presenter and there is always plenty of room to improve your skills. So make sure to ask for honest feedback from your trusted friends in the audience and work in fixing the issues.

11. Change the content for next presentation : If you have to present again the same subject matter make sure it is still relevant otherwise update your presentation topics to match what is latest and the greatest .

Hope you will follow the above guidelines and next time if  i happen to hear you present , i expect you remember the above and show that.  Good luck with your presentation skills. As always I’m there to help you to improve.

Classroom learning with Concert of Technology

While we are learning courses online at Udacity (https://www.udacity.com/  ) and Coursera (http://www.coursera.org/ ),  we are supposed to be actively communicating with fellow students and the course  teams under the discussion forums. During the recent course I took this March 2014, I found out in one of the discussion forum that 10 to 13 year old students are also participating in learning management courses. Technology is allowing individuals of any age, to learn what they want and when they want. It is now possible to individualize instructions in the same way as teachers do to their pupil.

I felt that there is an opportunity to bring my corporate best practices and technology knowledge to schools where the foundation for future behavior of the students gets established.  Smart use of software can help to a large extent to transform school’s methods of teaching but this movement of redesigning classrooms to modern learning experiences needs commitment and a change in mind set  of the  authorities, teachers, parents and students of various schools.  It is a transformation for the school’s management, teachers and all the stake holders.

Education is transforming. But the way education is viewed by our younger generation is troubling. Students stay uninspired and less motivated to learn. Students prefer studies only for getting good marks.Teachers are less motivated to go beyond their comfort zones to experiment new ways of teachings.

STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math)   are necessary for students to help make their countries competitive and them to be employable.  The attitude of just studying for exams/marks is affecting the quality of students’ knowledge and job readiness. Students should move away from subject memorization to training focusing on skills in order to match what modern companies and society is looking for.

Since I worked and lived in the US for several years, I started checking the happenings in the US where STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math)   are given top priority. I found that their national science foundation is pretty serious about reforming education and even private companies are pumping millions of dollars into reforming education.  Their schools are equipped with modern technology tools and software for teaching and by 2019, industry analysts predicts that high school students will take half of their courses online.

Companies like Intel Corporation, Facebook, IBM have given Billions of dollars for reforming education sector.

Companies like Microsoft in collaboration with others are bringing learning experience to millions of children across the globe. More on this here http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/en-us/reporting/serving-communities/education/

Many schools in the US are adopting technology practices as their way of teaching. Some examples of schools which are forefront in using   technology to their benefit are as below

https://www.altschool.com/

http://www.minervaproject.com/

Even schools in my place (India , Rajahmundry) are pretty enthusiastic in adopting technologies, games, yoga, field trips etc  for students. But what I felt is that they are doing it more for marketing purposes  and more ad hoc  than a continues improvement process to transform the schools best practices, to be  sustainable and result oriented.

Here is what I think should be adopted by schools in shaping our students’ learning experiences, all round growth and the progress of the country’s youth to a sophisticated living with best practices for a better life in this digital century. Remember Technology is not the solution but it is a powerful tool in transforming the nation’s kids to be smart.

First let’s separate school (Teachers, class rooms, labs and other infrastructure) and learning.

School: Children are the goal of any school.

There is a strong need for bringing some standards of how teaching is delivered irrespective of who the teacher is.  Every teacher is having his/her own style of teaching but there is a need for some guidelines of best practices so that students don’t feel uncomfortable with every new teacher that replaces earlier teacher.

Schools need to teach a new set of skills that go beyond the classroom syllabus. Modern work practices , daily life and cultural transformation of societies makes it mandatory that kids are taught spirituality, leadership skills, Reasoning capabilities, healthy lifestyles, scientific analysis, presentation skills,  yoga and meditation.

School should focus more on creating lab experiences for children (learning by doing) and based on the syllabus (state or CBSE) they should entertain students to make things in the lab. Syllabus should not be taught chapter after chapter but a holistic look at the content should be considered and  school should plan teaching subjects with all connected content so that students will get to know the big picture of the subject matter.

By teaching for many years teachers become comfortable and good at what they are teaching. But they should realize that world is moving at rapid pace and technology is changing how we live and work. There is a need to demystify technology to help them get to know how their subject knowledge is used by corporate and society and guide them to learn from fellow teachers from across the globe.

“We should not just teach what we know. we should always learn something new to teach our younger generation”.

Examples:    http://betterlesson.com/    http://www.discoveryeducation.com/teachers/     http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/0/    http://peeragogy.org/

http://www.mathalicious.com/lessons   http://www.kickboardforteachers.com/  http://voxy.com/blog/index.php/2011/03/hardest-languages-infographic/

Management of schools should have innovative mind set and should be ready to experiment and invite industry experts for advice in changing how they function. They should not maintain the status Quo.

Students should be encouraged to participate in global challenges to solve some of the world’s problems , that makes them realize the opportunities that exist later in their career planning. http://www.minervaproject.com/

http://www.wecanchange.com/

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/education/competitions/international-science-and-engineering-fair.html

http://www.coursolve.org/

Students should be encouraged to look around for problems in their own  town/city/villages are facing and should be encouraged to solve them.

Example : http://www.notimpossiblelabs.com/#!about/c15vq

Teachers should help children the ability to find the information/knowledge kids need by cultivating analytic skills, curiosity and research skills.

Teachers should encourage kids to ask many questions. Their curiosity leads them to stay creative but many teachers quickly usher kids to stop asking. It’s an unfortunate habit and it’s one that threatens  creativity and innovation skills of the kid.

Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children’s_use_of_information

School management should not become complacent with their best practices because we are in a state of constant change across all fields of knowledge, practices and lifestyles. Today’s best practices become redundant within few months so it is better to stay agile and review their position.

Learning:  We live in a very dynamic world where information is rapidly changing. It is unrealistic to rely solely on text book for teaching kids. The text book can best serve as direction for planning syllabus completion for the academic year

Modern technology resources are available to reach out to what we want to learn and when we want to learn due to ubiquitous presence of internet facilities across all tech gadgets we use. School management should review what resources can be deployed for better learning experiences for teachers and students.

Some examples of resources available for Schools that won’t cost lot’s of money but keep them on the cutting edge teaching methods are as follows

https://www.remind101.com/  A safe way for teachers to text message students and stay in touch with parents. Free.

http://www.google.com/edu/apps/#how-it-works  Helps in assignments and other teaching resources.

Moodle : https://moodle.org/  A Complete education portel for teaching, assignments, quizzes and other cool stuff.

http://www.vincigenius.com/

There is a seismic changes happening in education sector. Companies like Google , IBM, Facebook are investing millions of dollars in reforming schools and developing cool technology tools and educational resources. Bill and Melinda gates foundation, governments, NGO’s and many enterprising individuals are reshaping school education. Schools should continuously monitor the trends and  adjust , align to modern best practices.

Example: http://campustechnology.com/articles/2014/05/06/google-developing-free-lms-as-part-of-apps-for-education.aspx

https://www.khanacademy.org/

http://www.gatesfoundation.org/What-We-Do/US-Program/College-Ready-Education

Students should be made aware of what’s happening in other parts of the country and globally and they should be encouraged to connect with fellow students from across the globe for exchanging best practices of learning not just subject matter but also cultural differences and lifestyles of that country.

Example : http://www.newschools.org/venture/school-of-one

Schools should develop a framework of higher order thinking and skills enhancements while teaching kids.

Example of higher order thinking while a subject is taught by the teacher is as follows.

Type of thinking Encouraged Questions Posed
Memory Who invented Mobile Phone ? (Martin cooper)
Convergent thinking How has Mobile phones affected our daily lives?
Divergent thinking If there are no Mobile phones how would history have been changed?
Evaluative thinking What would you do when no mobile phone on earth works?

School assignments should help kids to discover and should be inquiry based drawing upon higher order thinking skills. Example Social studies. Ask students to play a role of a political leader and ask him/her  suggest some good policy matters that benefits millions of people.. Maths :  Using internet find 10 most innovative companies of the world, their products, their best practices and make a bar graph of the same.  Science: Design a useful product to a local merchant and demo it to them. Language: Read a book or analyse this article I wrote and put it as a comment.

Students should be taught time management skills. They should be able to allocate time for learning, yoga, meditation, sports and subject contents.

Parents should be made part of this whole process and should be engaged in all the efforts that schools is attempting,  to prepare their children for a digitally connected  world.

Ultimately I would say to school managements that “If you are not living on the edge you are  living in a crowded space of too many me too type schools”

You are all welcome to reach me thru your comments.

Thanks to kids from “Tennis Couching Centre” Rajahmundry for valuable feed back of their experiences and to the coach Laxman for the support.

Checklists regarding passwords

Many websites requires us to register in order to use their services or products such as ebay, amazon, ticket booking sites etc. Many of us already registered on various social websites such as facebook,  linkedIn, youtube and the list goes on depending on what websites you go. Most of us already have email accounts such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo mail. In all these cases you have to remember the passwords that you used on each site. After some times it becomes difficult to remember passwords. So let’s see how we can simplify this problem. Many of us also use the same password on all the services we access online. This makes easy for hackers to go into our important accounts. Avoid easy to guess passwords such as “password”, 12345 , your names etc..

1. Select a word that you can never forget. Some examples are your close friend”s name,  singer name,  actor names or color or parent, or lover or something that you like the most. For example let me select a word  ‘SoftTouch’ . Then let’s say you want to register at www.nature.com. Now what I can do is add the first or last three digits from nature to my most remembered word. Now my password will be ‘SofttouchNAT’ or “SofttouchURE’.. To make it safe from hacking or stealing by others now I might add a special character to the password. In the above example I can make my password as ‘SofttouchNAT1?’ by adding a ‘1’ and ‘?’ mark

Remember to select your most memorable word to be of length more than 6 digits so it will be safe from hacking.

2. Another simple way to remember password is jumbling your word with numbers or special characters. Let’s say from above example ‘Softtouch’ I can add 123 in between such as ‘S1oft2touch3’

This makes it difficult to predict your password.

3.Let’s say you love a song so much that you know each word of it so well.  If you have to change password every two months or so this technique will help you to keep going by using a word from the song as your password with a mixture of other characters to make it safe as above.

4. Use two level authentication so that when someone access your account from other computers the service ask you for verification. Here are more details about it for your gmail account. Step 1. Your password. 2. Using the Google Authenticator app available for Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry, 2) via SMS, or 3) through a voice call (meaning you could even use a landline if you didn’t have a cellphone—basically the call would read off the code to you).

Even facebook allows you to have two step authentication to protect you from hackers…

5. You can use password generator services such as Lasspass , keepass, 1password

Remember there are other ways of remembering passwords. You just need to make use of your creative brain.’

Good luck with passwords.

Clean water for cheap: Lukas jager developed  a bowl that can be used for purifying water.  The bowls are made of a clay and sawdust mix that is fired at 850 degrees Celsius. The sawdust burns away during firing leaving behind pores in the clay that make it ideal for purifying liquids at a fast rate. By adding colloidal silver, remaining traces of bacteria are killed, extending the shelf life of the final product. look for pictures here http://www.lukasjager.nl/waterschap.html
