My life story in Six words

One of the habit I’m developing while at my regular walk during Morning and evening is to keep my mind busy with thoughts that might help me with my work and life. One of the routine is to write blogs on something that could  help/inspire someone who reads my blog. I was thinking of writing a blog for quite some time but was busy with guest lectures and a Coursera course (https://www.coursera.org/ )  “Developing innovative Ideas for a New company” I started this March 3rd. This is a six week course but they allowed students to go ahead and finish the course earlier. It occurred to me that I should attempt to complete all six weeks course in Six days of the first week itself but should be able to target for highest marks possible. Guess what, I completed the course but took Ten days (Wednesday 12/3/2014) taking the last quiz before midnight 12.00 PM. So the result is that by constraining to six days forced me to be creative with my daily schedule.

So the constraint that I made for completing my course in six days made me think creatively and set goals to reach it as much as possible. Constraints should enhance creativity not bog you down to stress and anxiety.

The most common problem college students engage is procrastination, the act of ‘putting off something until a future time – postponing or deferring action’. That means most of them become serious with their exams or career planning in the last minute. This creates stress that leads to anxiety.

They come to me with this problem of stress and anxiety due to lack of time (it’s too late). How do I help them?  This became my challenge for  quite some time during my daily walk.  I read extensively on how to reduce stress and anxiety as listed bellows that helps some of the students or employees to overcome their stress and anxiety.  But I was not sure that this research will solve everyone’s problem.

The only way stress or anxiety can be reduced is to plan ahead and stick with that plan and reach the goals you want to reach.

But that is not easy with the distractions of daily life. So now I thought let’s explore how to use these constraints of daily distractions, mental weakness, and procrastination to reach our goals or reduce the stress.

I started exploring the web on constraints and came across a story of Ernest Hemingway, a story writer who bet with friends that he could write an entire story in just six words. It seems impossible feat but Hemingway did it as follows

“FOR SALE: Baby Shoes, Never worn”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_sale%3A_baby_shoes%2C_never_worn

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18768430

That excited me to write my life story in six words and here is what it is

Fall ,Rise, plan, achieve, Sorrow , splendid –RK

So procrastination , stress , anxiety , tension or what ever it is that is stopping you becoming great should be used for your advantage.  For me planning , setting goals and also sticking with the goals to the best of my abilities is what made me what I’m today. My physical constraint never bothered me reaching to a better life with best practices. So I wish this blog inspires you all to think how to use your constraints for your advantage creatively…

Now I challenge you to write your life story in six words as comments to this blog.

Inspiration is for amateurs, rest of us just show up and get to work

In the previous blog I mentioned that procrastination (postponing what is supposed to be completed )  is one of the major problems many face whether it is exams or work on hand for employees. This leads to stress and tension and also makes one to remain amateur with limited life skills.   Most of the sub optimal quality of the products we use , the quality of life citizens are living are due to the result of amateurs at work. They try their best to beat the system and remain at sub optimal levels delivering low quality service or products. This affects the quality of the whole society. Those who are reading this blog should understand that

“Inspiration is for amateurs – the rest of us just show up and get to work. And the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself and that you will – through work – bump into other possibilities and kick open other doors that you would never have dreamt of if you were just sitting around looking for a great ‘art [idea].’ And the belief that process, in a sense, is liberating and that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every day. Today, you know what you’ll do, you could be doing what you were doing yesterday, and tomorrow you are gonna do what you [did] today, and at least for a certain period of time you can just work. If you hang in there, you will get somewhere.” Chuck-close http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/12/27/chuck-close-on-creativity/

The title’s sentence is given by a legendary photorealist chuck close (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Close)

So if you want to achieve something great you should come out of your comfort zone and work towards your greater self.

Here are some tips, so you can organize your time for a greater productive life.

  1. A workplace/study place with minimal distractions. Put away your cell phones remove the plugs of the TV sets and make sure your room or work place is not having any kind of distractions so you can finish the most important task on hand to reach your goals.
  2. A Daily walk. Make sure while walking you are not just listening to songs. If you are having something to achieve/or have a problem to solve and need a plan then watch the people, watch the surroundings and watch your mind’s thoughts. Connect the events on the road with your thoughts to come up with something that can help to solve the problem you have on hand.
  3. Accountability metrics. Ernest Hemingway tracked his daily word output on a chart to mark his progress. Many genius people track their progress every day to make sure they are reaching their goals.
  4. Important work verses busy work.  We are so connected today that distractions are so many and confuse us what is important work verses what keeps us busy. Social websites such as Facebook and twitter keeps us busy but we have to make sure what is important for the progress of us not the progress of social website and not making their owners rich. We need to know what is important for us to reach our goals and prioritize that more.
  5. Make time to relax.  We should be able to stop when we are working too much; sacrificing our health and our social obligations with our near and dear. Workaholics and people who spend too much time on one task may become sick and may burn out early. A nice stroll in the morning, evening, visiting a holy place, a park,  a nice time spent with a friend are some examples of rejuvenating our energies for the big task next day.
  6.  A supportive partner. It would be wonderful to have one who understand yours needs, help you to reach your goals, provide the comfort you need when you are worried, reduce your stress and tensions and stand beside you in your life’s journey of sorrow to grandeur

So get back to work my friends and have a quality life, while I provide the inspiration to amateurs with more blogs to bring them to quality life too.

Let’s not do it better , Let’s do it different

“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes.”

― Albert Einstein

Recently I started paying attention to connect different comments posted on Facebook to see if I can come up with a different insight and experiences that are different than routine. On Facebook I saw postings of joy and relief when exams are completed and students planning different activities to enjoy holidays before next semester starts. One was excited to go to Mumbai and some going back to their native cities and towns to hit the malls and cinema theatres. I saw posts from professionals who are planning of having trips to exotic places. I watch comments, likes flowing into photos posted on the face book. One of my friend posts about the songs he likes, another posts photos with beer cup in his hand.

My observations is that when we go to a farmers market we ask our mind questions related to food and when we are watching cricket game   in stadium we ask questions about the game to our mind such as where the fielding players are standing and what the scores are and who might win. We don’t usually think asking our mind  how to cool our tension with a nice and fresh fruit from a vegetable market when we are in a crowded cricket stadium or how to prepare for our next exams.

Our mind is processing thoughts and giving us answers to questions that we ask. The questions that you are asking are what drives your behavior and is the key for your success in getting better at everything you love to do. By combining the fun and excitement of game with a healthy drink of fruit juice instead of junk food makes your experience more memorable and keeps you healthy from nervous breakdowns but you did not ask you mind how to do that before going to the game.

We can maximize our fun, experiences, find new possibilities and enrich our lives if we can think of different things that can be done by asking the right question to our mind.  So if you are having holidays and want to have fun or great experience ask your mind what are the new options you have other than the predictable things you do during a holiday.   This is what is called an innovative mind set is. This kind of asking the mind, the right questions enriches your life with better experiences and may lead you to more opportunities that you have never imagined possible. I always ask this question myself at the end of the day “What is that one thing that you did differently today?”  The key to innovation is to connect unrelated dots from different things to come up with new experiences, new possibilities and new opportunities.  Good luck for a “ better life with best practices” (My company’s tag Line and vision)
